Bayne finishes 19th in fog-shortened event in Pocono

LONG POND, Pa. (Aug.1, 2016) – Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion, scored a 19th-place finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) event at Pocono Raceway on Monday afternoon after heavy fog forced NASCAR to call the race complete after 138 of the 160 scheduled laps.

“We had a solid run going,” said Bayne after the race. “We were able to drive our way up to sixth there before getting shuffled out after restarting on the outside on what I think was our last restart. From there we just didn’t have the strategy fall our way with that caution coming out for the weather. I wish we could’ve run this thing to the end but we’ll get them next week at Watkins Glen with this AdvoCare Ford.”

Bayne took the green flag for the rain-postponed event from the 31st position but was able to utilize a Lap 19 restart following a competition caution to race into 22nd. The Roush Fenway Racing driver continued to battle for position inside the top 25 throughout the first green-flag run and got up to as high as 12th before hitting pit road under green on Lap 52.

Bayne cycled out to 21st following the pit stop and maintained his track position until a caution on Lap 85 gave crew chief Matt Puccia the opportunity to bring the AdvoCare Ford to pit road for four tires and a chassis adjustment. The Knoxville, Tenn. native returned to the track for the ensuing restart in the 23rd position but wasted little time working his way into the top 20 and up to 19th before the caution came out once again on Lap 98.

Crew chief Puccia decided to make a strategy call during this caution and left Bayne out on the race track while several of the race leaders came to pit road. The strategy call worked as Bayne took the Lap 103 restart from the ninth position. Bayne continued to move forward from there, making it three wide off of the first corner to improve to sixth before the caution came out once again on Lap 104.

Bayne took the Lap 109 restart from the sixth position but was shuffled back to 15th after getting forced three wide heading into the second corner. Despite the setback Bayne never gave up and continued to fight for position in the top 15 before another round of green flag pit stops began on Lap 125.

With fog closing in and weather in the distance Bayne returned to the track in 20th, racing with Roush Fenway teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. However, as the fog grew thicker the visibility began to worsen, NASCAR decided to throw the caution flag and ultimately the red flag in the hopes that the fog would clear up and the race can resume.

Unfortunately, the fog grew thicker and forced NASCAR to call the race official on Lap 138 of the originally scheduled 160 laps. Bayne was scored with a 19th-place finish.

With the result, Bayne now trails the 16th and final position in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship grid by 28 points.

Wallace finishes 27th on tough night in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (July 31, 2016) – Bubba Wallace, driver of the No. 6 Fastenal Ford Mustang, posted the third fastest time in the second round of qualifying, advancing to the third round and eventually earning a 10th-place starting position on what looked to be a promising night in the NASCAR XFINITY Series event at Iowa Speedway. However, Wallace’s Roush Fenway Mustang was too loose at the start of the 250-Lap event and an incident on Lap 27 would prove to be the catalyst for a sequence of unfortunate events that ultimately led to a 27th-place finish.

“It’s hard to believe one team could have this much bad luck,” said Wallace. “This was a tough night. The Fastenal Ford was fast in qualifying, but we were loose all night. We’ll battle back and go after it next week at Watkins Glen.”

Wallace made his way back onto the lead lap with the free pass after a competition caution on Lap 40. However, the team came down for further repairs on pit road and was late getting off of pit road when the one to go was given for the race to go back green. The Fastenal Ford was quickly overtaken by the leaders, and Wallace would not run on the lead lap for the remainder of the race.

With the car continuing to be ‘wrecking loose’ and the race going on long green-flag runs, Wallace fell down multiple laps before making contact with the wall again on Lap 122 after contact with the No. 93 car. The team returned to the track in the 33rd position following the repairs and would fight its way to 27th by the drop of the checkered flag.

Earnhardt gives health updates on 'The Dale Jr. Download'

Dale Earnhardt Jr. gave some health-related updates Monday on "The Dale Jr. Download" podcast, including a revelation that his doctors think his latest concussion occurred at Michigan on June 12 and that his plan for the future "is to race more."

"The symptoms have sort of plateaued," Earnhardt Jr. revealed. "There are days when I feel like that the balance is better and then there's certainly moments when it's not. "

It is still unknown if Earnhardt Jr. will race this weekend at Watkins Glen, but NASCAR's Most Popular wheelman is itching for a quick recovery. 

"I'm very impatient and I want change now and I want improvement now. I'm constantly texting my doctor. (I told him), 'tell me you can fix this.' "

Earnhardt missed the past three races after experiencing concussion-related symptoms. Jeff Gordon filled Junior's seat in the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway. Alex Bowman replaced Junior at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Chris Buescher wins rained-out Pennsylvania 400

LONG POND, PA – Chris Buescher on Monday won the rain-delayed Pennsylvania 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway for his 1st win of the season, 1st win at Pocono, and 1st career win. This is the second win for Front Row Racing.

The race was called with 22 laps remaining after fog rolled into the track that made it impossible to continue. Buescher had stayed out under green and was in the lead when the caution fell with 28 laps to go. He led 12 of the 138 laps. The race was red flagged for more than an hour before the race was called.

"It was stressful," said Buescher, who lost a lap because of a pit road speeding penalty on Lap 94 and regained it as the highest-scored lapped car under caution on Lap 109. “I tried not to get my hopes up because I know how these things can play out. Mother Nature can be really nice sometimes and really mean.

"If that sun would have come out, it would have changed our whole day."

The race was run on Monday after rain postponed it Sunday.

Brad Keselowski finished 2nd followed by Regan Smith, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, and Kurt Busch.

"He's a good kid and an XFINITY champion (2015)," Stewart said during the red-flag period. "It doesn't matter how you get your first win. You just want to get your first win. I hope it works out for him right now."

Pole sitter, Martin Truex, Jr. hit the wall early in the race after a tire went down from a broken valve stem. He finished 38th.

On Lap 106, Joey Logano's winning chances evaporated when Chase Eliott's Chevrolet broke loose in the Tunnel Turn (turn 2) and knocked Logano’s No. 22 Ford into the outside wall. Elliott’s car also took extensive damage when it nosed into the inside wall.

Buescher can earn a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup if he finishes the 26-race regular season in 30th place or higher in the series standings. Buescher currently is six points behind 30th-place David Ragan, who now drives for BK Racing.

There were 19 lead changes among 11 drivers and 7 cautions for 31 yellow flag laps. The average speed was 127.581 mph.

Weather delays Monday's Pocono Sprint Cup race

Damp conditions persisted at Pocono Raceway throughout Monday morning, creating weepers and delaying the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' Pennyslvania 400 (160 laps, 400 miles) after it was postponed Sunday. 

Originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday, the series' second stop at the 2.5-mile track was moved to Monday at 11 a.m. ET. Green flag for Monday was originally set for 11:07 a.m. ET.

Polesitter Martin Truex Jr. will lead the field to green with Joe Gibbs Racing's Carl Edwards lining up alongside his Furniture Row Racing No. 78 Toyota. Richard Childress Racing's Paul Menard, JGR's Denny Hamlin and RCR's Ryan Newman round out the top five qualifiers.

The June Sprint Cup Series Pocono event also was postponed by weather and eventually ran the following Monday. Three-time "Tricky Triangle" winner Kurt Busch was the victor in his No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet with Hendrick Motorsports' Dale Earnhardt Jr. locking in the runner-up position. 

This week, as Earnhardt Jr. continues to recover from concussion-like symptoms, Jeff Gordon is wheeling the No. 88 Chevrolet for the second time this season. He will start 24th.

As of 11:00am ET, it is not raining at Pocono Raceway. Track drying is underway, but NASCAR continues to battle weepers on the track. The race will not start as scheduled. Currently NASCAR is hoping for a 12:30pm/et start.

Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota spoke with reporters on the NBC Sports Network on Monday and said that reports are that NASCAR expects the track to be ready by around 1:30pm ET.

Elliott Sadler

Elliott Sadler, driver of the No. 1 OneMain Chevrolet, finished third in Saturday’s U.S. Cellular 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) race at Iowa Speedway. Sadler captured his sixth top-five finish of the 2016 season and has regained the lead in the NXS point standings.

The Emporia, Va. native started the evening from the fourth position at Iowa and battled hard in the top-five all race long. By lap 2, Sadler had already advanced the OneMain Camaro one position to third and was scored fourth when the competition caution was displayed at lap 42. Over the next 58 laps, Sadler moved from the fifth position to third and was adjusting well to his car on the long green-flag run.

By lap 100, Sadler was running comfortably in the third position and remained there until the caution flew at lap 116. Kevin Meendering (crew chief) made the call to have Sadler come down pit road for four fresh tires and fuel. The OneMain Camaro came in third and left pit road first. The No. 1 team did a tremendous job on pit road and allowed Sadler to gain positions on pit road with the help of precision stops. The short-run handling of the OneMain car was not where the No. 1 team wanted it to be, but the car continued to improve the more laps that were laid down. With outstanding long runs, the OneMain team only made minor tire-pressure adjustments throughout the race keeping Sadler consistently in the top five.

The final caution flag of the day came at lap 150 and the No. 1 team elected to take four tires and fuel only. This strategy resulted in Sadler starting from the second position with less than 100 laps to go. For the first 30 laps of this run, the report over the radio was that the car was loose. Sadler moved back a couple of positions to the fourth spot but the car started to come back to Sadler as he ran down Sam Hornish Jr. with 15 laps remaining. The OneMain Camaro crossed the finish line third Saturday night at Iowa Speedway and Sadler regained his lead in the NXS points.

Erik Jones took home the checkered flag at Iowa. He was followed by Ty Dillon, Sadler, Brennan Poole, and Dakoda Armstrong rounding out the top-five.

“We had a great run tonight. We ran in the top 10 all night but just got a little too loose there at the end. Very proud of my guys, they did an awesome job tonight.”

Justin Allgaier and the BRANDT Professional Agriculture team earned their 15th top-10 finish of the season on Saturday at Iowa Speedway, placing seventh in the U.S. Cellular 250. After the solid effort, Allgaier sits fifth in the NASCAR Xfinity Series point standings, 57 points behind the leader.

Allgaier started 11th in the 250-lap event, but didn’t stay there long, moving into ninth on lap 2. Running in the same position when the first caution came out on lap 28, the 30-year-old relayed to the team that he was free off the wall, tight center and snappy on exit. The team opted to stay out and wait for the scheduled competition caution on lap 40 to pit. Once that yellow waved, Allgaier brought the BRANDT Chevy down for four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment.

Restarting in ninth on lap 47, Allgaier advanced to seventh by lap 52. Shortly after, he radioed to the crew that he was lacking grip, but managed to hold on to seventh until the caution flag waved on lap 116. During the pit stop, the team changed four Goodyear tires, made a track bar adjustment and packed the No. 7 Chevy with fuel. On the lap-121 restart, Allgaier slid from seventh back to eighth before another caution came out on lap 123. Under the yellow, Allgaier relayed that the BRANDT Chevy had more grip during that short run. The Illinois native stayed out through both that caution and another one that would come out shortly after. Once the field was back to green on lap 133, Allgaier lost a position to fall to ninth, but was able to get back to eighth on lap 137. When the final caution flag of the evening waved on lap 150, Allgaier radioed that his Chevy had lost grip during the run and came to pit road for four tires and enough fuel to make it to the end of the race.

Running in eighth on the restart on lap 158, Allgaier advanced to sixth before the first green-flag lap was completed. He set his sights on fifth-place Brad Keselowski and was able to pass the No. 22 on lap 177. With 50 laps to go, Allgaier was still running in fifth. Shortly after, he came over the radio to say the Chevy was getting tight in the center of the turns. As the laps wound down, Allgaier fell back two spots to ultimately finish seventh.

Erik Jones won the race and was followed by Ty Dillon, Elliott Sadler, Brennan Poole and fifth-place Dakoda Armstrong.

“Overall, I’m really proud of our BRANDT Professional Agriculture team. We finished seventh, which wasn’t as good as we wanted, but we were able to race up in the top five with an ill-handling car. I thought we were going to end up fifth there at the end, but ultimately our Chevy started getting away from us during that long green-flag run. We’ll go back to the shop and get ready to go road-course racing at Watkins Glen next week.”

In his fourth career NASCAR XFINITY Series start and first since September of last year, Josh Berry picked up where he left off with a top-10 effort at Iowa Speedway Saturday night.

Behind the wheel of the No. 88 Sun Energy 1 Chevrolet, Berry finished ninth in the U.S. Cellular 250. It was his second consecutive top-10 after a seventh-place finish at Richmond International Raceway last year. On this night, Berry never fell out of the top 10 despite frenzied racing in the 250-lap event. He started sixth – one off his career-best – and climbed as high as fifth with a quick pit stop with just under 100 laps to go.

On the ensuring restart Berry received hard contact from Daniel Suarez, who inadvertently drove into the back of Berry’s car when it didn’t get up to speed. The contact damaged the radiator on Suarez’s car and bent the rear spoiler on Berry’s, hence altering the handle of the No. 88. Until that point Berry’s crew had methodically chipped away at a pesky tight condition that had hampered the Hendersonville, Tennessee native through the first half of the race, and the Sun Energy 1 car was handling its best prior to that setback.

The incident knocked the No. 88 back to seventh but not out of contention. In fact, Berry maintained seventh for the next 30 laps. Fuel conservation forced him to relinquished spots to Dakoda Armstrong and Brad Keselowski in the final circuits, but nonetheless, his return to the site of his Xfinity Series debut in 2014 saw him leave three spots better with a ninth-place effort.

Berry has now finished 12th or better in three of his four career Xfinity Series races.

Erik Jones dominated the race, leading 153 of 250 laps en route to his third win of the year. He lost his lead on the final round of pit stops but passed Ty Dillon with 20 laps to go for the victory. Dillon held on to second, with JR Motorsports’ Elliott Sadler finishing third. Brennan Poole, Armstrong, Sam Hornish and Justin Allgaier rounded out the top seven finishers.

Berry will return to the seat of the No. 88 on Sept. 24 at Kentucky Speedway.  Next week Kenny Habul will drive the No. 88 Sun Energy 1 Chevrolet at Watkins Glen International for JR Motorsports, becoming the seventh driver to get behind the wheel of the No. 88 this season (Chase Elliott 5, Alex Bowman 5, Kevin Harvick 4, Cole Custer 2, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2, Josh Berry 1).

“First and foremost I’m so grateful for the opportunity to drive this car. I know I can compete at this level, and Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. continues to believe in me. I have to thank him and Kelley (Earnhardt Miller) for the opportunity. I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to get a better finish. We had a really good car, and I just missed a shift on that restart. I know we were better than ninth place, but between that and having to save fuel, it’s where we ended up. Dave Elenz did a fantastic job calling the race. He was able to coach me on hitting my box on pit road, which was probably my biggest hurdle last year at Richmond. Those went way more smoothly tonight, and the crew was able to gain spots on pit road almost every stop. I really appreciate this team for all the hard work they put into this weekend.

Custer Finishes Fifth at Pocono

Race 12 of 23: Pocono Mountains 150 at Pocono Raceway

Pocono Raceway is a momentum track, and Cole Custer and the Haas Automation team from JR Motorsports now have some after Custer drove his Chevrolet Silverado to a top-five finish in the Pocono Mountains 150. Saturday’s race for NASCAR Camping World Truck Series machines also gave Custer a big boost toward a qualified Chase position with four races remaining.

Custer was seventh on the final restart with four laps remaining, but got past Rico Abreu on the final lap to claim his third top-five and fifth top-10 finish of the season in 12 races. Prior to that, his race was an exercise in patience. Starting 16th, the 18-year-old from California picked off five spots on the opening lap to give himself some track position.

All that vanished on lap 13 when Custer spun exiting Turn 2. Running the low line next to Ben Rhodes, Custer’s black-and-red Haas Automation Chevrolet twitched and came around, sliding toward the outside wall. He kept it off the wall and out of trouble, though a tire went flat during the slide. Hitting pit road, crew chief Marcus Richmond called for right-side tires and sent him back out in 22nd position.

After a couple of brief caution flags, Custer seemed to find the handle and began picking off positions. He stayed around there until the fourth caution came out. He hit pit road again, this time for four tires, a wedge adjustment and fuel to the end. The Haas Automation team got him three spots on pit road, and he restarted seventh on lap 28. That nearly proved disastrous, as the BKR duo of Daniel Hemric and Tyler Reddick crashed off Turn 1, nearly collecting Custer’s Chevrolet in the process.

Over the final 30 laps, Custer was in the top 10 and moving forward. Restarts were problematic, as he rarely was on the outside line for them. The outside line had momentum and took off well, and Custer had to fight from the bottom on numerous occasions.

The final restart of the day, with four laps to go, allowed Custer to get the jump he needed. Battling with Abreu, Custer made the pass on the final lap and held it to the finish to earn his second straight top-10 result.

William Byron won the race, his fifth triumph of the season. He was followed by Cameron Hayley, Brett Moffitt, Timothy Peters and Custer.

Custer remained 11th in the series point standings, but cut nine points from his deficit to Hayley, the eighth-place driver. Custer trails Hayley by just five points for the final position in the inaugural NCWTS Chase. Just four races remain until the Chase field is set.

"It was a little crazy out there on restarts, but we were able to keep the Haas Automation Chevrolet Silverado in one piece. We just couldn’t get a restart on the outside when we needed one. The outside line would roll, and if you were on the inside, it got really loose. It was another good points day, we carried the momentum from Eldora and we are five points out of the Chase with four races to go. All in all, it was a great weekend for me, Marcus and the team.”

Gilliland Notches Fifth K&N Pro Win

NEWTON, Iowa - Todd Gilliland has shown he can win in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West.

Friday night in the Casey's General Store 150, Gilliland top the best drivers from both series en route to the win in the combination race at Iowa Speedway. He led 116 laps for his fourth West win of the season.

It was the fifth victory of the season for the 6-year-old NASCAR Next driver from Sherrill's Ford, North Carolina, who earlier in the year picked up an East win at Florida's New Smyrna Speedway.

The 16-year-old NASCAR Next driver from Sherrill's Ford, North Carolina, took the green flag from the second starting position behind NASCAR Next alumnus Kyle Benjamin and swapped the lead with him twice before taking the point from Benjamin heading into the halfway break.

Once the contest restarted, Benjamin grabbed the lead once again on Lap 81, but was quickly tracked down by Gilliland two go-arounds later. Gilliland sped away from Benjamin and the rest of the field, leading the final 68 laps of the race.

Benjamin finished second and was credited with an East win as the top finisher in the series. Earlier in the day, Benjamin won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors Light.

Austin Theriault finished third, followed by Rev Racing and NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver Collin Cabre, and Ryan Partridge.

With his seventh top five in eight NASCAR K&N Pro West starts, Gilliland also retook the West championship points lead by three over Partridge with five races remaining. 

Benjamin was able to cut into the points lead in the East of Justin Haley. Haley, who finished seventh overall, leads by 32 points with four races left.

It was the third race in a row at Iowa that Bill McAnally Racing claimed the overall win. Gilliland's BMR teammate Riley Herbst finished sixth overall Friday night, followed by Haley, Hunter Baize, Gracin Raz and John Holleman IV.

The Casey's General Store 250 from Iowa Speedway will air on NBCSN Friday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. ET.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will be back in action at Watkins Glen International Friday, Aug. 5, while the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West takes the track next at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington, Saturday, Aug. 13.

Top-10 finish for Reed at Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa. (July 30, 2016) – Roush Fenway Racing driver Ryan Reed and the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes/American Diabetes Association team finished 10th on Saturday at Iowa Speedway after starting 14th and running in the top 10  the majority of the night.

“I’m really proud of how much we improved throughout the weekend,” said Reed. “We still have a long way to go but we are definitely starting to see progress. Top-10 finishes feel really nice, but we want more. We start our road course stint next week and we will be ready to continue the summer stretch at Watkins Glen.”

Reed started the 250-lap event from the 14th position after fighting a lack of grip during qualifying on Saturday afternoon. By the first caution on Lap 27, Reed had made his way up to 13th and said he was tight in the center. The team elected not to pit during the caution period, leaving Reed to restart 12th on Lap 32.

Soon after the restart, Reed made his way up to the 11th position and ran there until the competition caution on Lap 40. During the caution, crew chief Phil Gould brought Reed down pit road for four tires, fuel, an air pressure adjustment and a round of wedge. Reed restarted 12th on Lap 46.

By Lap 65, Reed had made his way back up to the 11th position and ran there until the next caution on Lap 114. The team pitted under the caution period for four fresh tires, fuel, and air pressure and track bar adjustments. Reed restarted 11th on Lap 120 before the caution was swiftly displayed one lap later.

Reed restarted 11th on the following restart and maintained that position until the third caution of the night on Lap 149. Under caution, Reed relayed to the team that he needed forward drive. The team pitted for tires, fuel, and air pressure and wedge adjustments. Reed gained one position on pit road to restart 10th with 93 laps to go.

After the restart, Reed drove up to the eighth position, but reported he was free on entrance a few laps later. He dropped back to the 10th position throughout the closing laps of the event and would cross the finish line in that position on Lap 250.

Reed remains 10th in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Championship standings. Next up for Reed is Watkins Glen International on Saturday, August 6th.
