Bayne was scored with a 19th-place finish in the NSCS event at Pocono Raceway on Monday afternoon after weather forced NASCAR to call the race official after 138 of 160 laps.

Bayne trails the 16th and final position in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship standings by 28 points.

Bayne ready for double-duty this weekend in Watkins Glen

CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 2, 2016) – This weekend’s events at Watkins Glen International mark the first time since the conclusion of the 2014 season that Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion, will compete in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) and the NASCAR XFINITY Series. Bayne, a two-time winner in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, will pilot the No. 60 AdvoCare Ford Mustang for Roush Fenway Racing.

One Year Ago at Watkins Glen

Greg Biffle overcame a flat tire early on in the Cheez-It 355 to earn a 14th-place finish.  Not only did Biffle have a flat tire, but the flat tire took out the front brake duct of the No. 16 Cheez-It Ford.  Multiple pit stops and fuel strategy put Biffle in the top 10 towards the end of the race, but missing the ‘bus stop’ cost him a few positions in the closing laps.

“It’s some of the most technical driving that we do after turn one, that shift to third as we’re going downhill into the bottom of a right hand turn, then up and shift through fourth through the middle of the Esses then a really high speed turn onto the top straightaway.  It’s a very intimidating part of the race track, but there’s a lot of speed there, a lot of lap time.  It’s a very fast road course."

A Year Ago At Watkins Glen

In the final road course race of the 2015 season, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was running in the 21st position when the inside lane stacked up on the restart causing nose damage to the No. 17 Ford. Stenhouse Jr. was scored in the 10th position with less than 30 laps remaining in Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen but differences in pit strategy forced Stenhouse to settle with a 34th-place finish.

On the Car

Weather strategy offers up a third-place finish for TBR and Regan Smith

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (August 1, 2016) – Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) achieved a milestone in its eighth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Regan Smith, driver of the No. 7 Advanced Patient Care (APC) Chevrolet along with some team strategy, scored a third-place finish in the Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway on Monday afternoon.

“We got to take the opportunities when they present themselves, and today and this weekend in general, just kind of had that feeling to it with the rain on and off all weekend long, and we were able to make the most out of it, and it’s something I’m proud of them for doing,” said Smith.

“I’m so happy for Tommy,” Smith continued. “Tommy has done this for a long time, and his strategy is second to none. He’s as good as anybody when it comes to calling a race and playing the strategy game. I think this is the team’s best non-plate finish ever, so that’s cool, and something that you can really get everybody pumped up at the shop about and take this on to the next race.”

Smith worked his way into the top-25 by halfway after he and Baldwin made some effective handling adjustments.

With 33 laps remaining, it became apparent that weather would be a factor as green-flag pit stops began. Baldwin chose not to pit until absolutely necessary, and it paid off.

Just several laps into the pit cycle, NASCAR displayed caution for fog, which was followed by a red flag. After waiting just under 90-minutes, the race was declared official.

The finish was the team’s best for a non-restrictor plate track. In 2011, Dave Blaney scored a third-place finish at Talladega Superspeedway.

“Today it seemed like I was the car owner, crew chief and meteorologist,” Baldwin joked. “Regan and I thought we’d roll the dice and bank on the weather. It’s always a gamble but today it worked out for us. I’m just very proud of this team.”

Another flying lug nut costly for Truex Jr. in Pocono

LONG POND, PA – Martin Truex Jr. called it “crazy bad luck.” The Furniture Row Racing driver was referring to a peculiar incident that short-circuited his performance in Monday’s rain-delayed and rain-shortened Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway. 

Truex, who started the 138 lapper from the pole, was owning the race early, leading the first 16 laps to raise his season laps led total to 1,005. 

But following a Lap-15 competition caution and a two-tire pit stop, trouble struck Truex’s No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Toyota, which posted an unsettling 38th-place finish in the Pennsylvania 400. 

As Truex was coming off of Turn 2, his right-front tire blew, sending him into the wall, resulting in heavy damage to his car. He came down pit road for repairs and eventually drove the car to the garage for additional repairs. He did return to the action, but was forced to retire from the race after another tire incident on Lap 100. He ran a total of 82 of the 138 laps. 

What caused the tire to go flat on Truex’s Toyota early in the race was an oddity to say the least. A lug nut that came off the old set of tires bounced off the ground, flew through one of the wheel holes, then lodged between the caliper and the wheel, knocking off the tire’s inner stem valve. 

“The car just plowed off of turn two – I couldn’t slow down,” explained Truex. “So many weird things have happened to us this year – it’s unbelievable and ridiculous. The car was so good. I was literally on cruise control and driving away.” 

Truex suffered a similar fate at the June race in Pocono. Following a pit stop on Lap 118 his right-rear tire blew as a result of a flying lug nut that got stuck behind the wheel, which eventually sheared off the inner stem valve. 

“I think it's weird to have a lug nut get stuck behind a wheel, but even more weird that it happened both times at Pocono this season,” said Truex. “I don’t have an explanation. I’m just calling it bad luck.” 

Even with his worst finish of the season, Truex only dropped one spot – to eighth -- in the driver point standings. He is actually tied with Jimmie Johnson for seventh, but Johnson wins the tiebreaker because of having more wins. In the Chase playoff points Truex is ninth. 

The race winner was Chris Buescher, who didn’t make a final pit stop and rode out the rain delay until NASCAR called the race with 22 laps remaining. Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Brad Keselowski, Regan Smith, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch. 

The next Sprint Cup Series race will be the second and final road race of the season, Sunday Aug. 7 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Watkins Glen International Preview: Bully Hill Vineyards 100

MOORESVILLE, NC (August 2, 2016) - For the first time this season HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks (HSMJM) will field five entries in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE). Joining Justin Haley, Hunter Baize, Tyler Dippel, and Harrison Burton will be NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Cole Custer. Custer will use Friday's NKNPSE Bully Hill Vineyards 100 as a tune-up for the upcoming NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on September 4.

HSMJM's four full-time drivers will be at the fast road course looking to score a win in the second road course event of the season. Haley finished second at the first road course event earlier this season at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). Dippel had a mechanical failure passing for the lead. Baize and Burton scored finishes of sixth and 11th respectively in their road course debuts. 

The Bully Hill Vineyards 100 at Watkins Glen International is race number 11 in the chase for the NKNPSE championship, a championship that HSMJM's own Justin Haley currently leads. Baize enters Friday's race fifth in series points as well as the Rookie-of-the-Year points leader. Tyler Dippel and Harrison Burton both remain solidly in the top-10 in NKNPSE points.

Justin Haley, driver of the No. 5... Haley makes the trip to New York with plenty of road course experience. He spends many of his NASCAR off weekends racing a TransAm car on road courses. He finish second at VIR earlier this season in the first NKNPSE road course race of the season. He enters Friday's Bully Hill Vineyards 100 as a favorite. Following a fourth-place finish a Iowa Speedway last weekend, he remains the NKNPSE points leader.

Harrison Burton, driver of the No. 12... Burton made his road course debut earlier this season at VIR. He impressed in that start, finishing 11th. He looks to improve on that finish this coming weekend at Watkins Glen International. He is currently ninth in NKNPSE points headed into the homestretch of the 2016 season.

Burton on Watkins Glen... "Watkins Glen is a pretty historic race track when you think about it. Lots of great race car drivers have raced there. It's one of the bigger NASCAR K&N Pro Series East events on the schedule and one that I really want to run well at, that's for sure. Hunter Baize, driver of the No. 13... Baize also made his road course debut at VIR in April and did so in impressive fashion. He scored a 6th-place finish. That 6th-place finish was just one of the top-10 runs in what has been an impressive eight top 10 finishes in 10 NKNPSE races this season. Other than his teammate Justin Haley, Baize has been the most consistent driver in the series. He scored his first career top-five finish last weekend at Iowa Speedway and looks to build on that this weekend at the very fast Watkins Glen International. He now sits fifth in series points.

Baize on Watkins Glen..."If you would've told me at the beginning of this season that I would've been excited to go to Watkins Glen, I would've told you that you were crazy. The truth is, I really am looking forward to it. This No. 13 Bicycle Playing Cards HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks team is really clicking right now. Kris and the entire team are bringing awesome race cars to the race track and I'm starting to really feel comfortable behind the wheel. Our road course car is very fast, we proved that at VIR. So I can't help but be excited to get on track on Friday. Right now, we're having a lot of fun."

Tyler Dippel, driver of the No. 38... Dippel is another HSMJM driver that made his road course debut this season. He was passing for the lead at VIR when a mechanical failure ended his chance for a win. He heads to Watkins Glen International looking for another top-10 finish. Other than Justin Haley, he is the only other HSMJM driver to visit victory lane. He did so at Mobile (Ala.) International Raceway on March 13. The Wallkill, N.Y., driver will look to repeat that performance in front of family and friends that are making the trip to Watkins Glen, N.Y. He sits sixth in series points.

Dippel on Watkins Glen... "I'm pretty excited to race at Watkins Glen. Our road course cars are very fast, I think we proved that at VIR. I think we have a really good shot at picking up our second win of the season and it would really mean a lot to not only me but this entire No. 38 EastWest Marine/TyCar team."

Cole Custer, driver of the No. 98... Custer joins HSMJM for the Bully Hill Vineyards 100 at Watkins Glen International this weekend. He regularly drives the No. 00 Haas-Automation Chevrolet Silverado for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He races part-time in the NASCAR XFINITY Series for JR Motorsports as well. This Friday, he will be driving the No. 98 Haas-Automation Chevrolet SS for HSMJM. Friday's NKNPSE event will be a tune-up for Custer prior to the the NCWTS event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday, September 4.

Custer on Watkins Glen... "I can't thank everyone at Haas-Automation and HScott Motorsports  with Justin Marks enough for the opportunity to race in Friday's Bully Hill Vineyards 100 at Watkins Gle. Getting extra laps at a road course will be very beneficial for me as we prepare for the upcoming NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
