Remember, drivers still earn playoff points for stage wins (one) and victories (five).

Truex Advances To Round Of 8 With Charlotte Win
Martin Truex Jr. continued his dominant season with a win in the Round of 12 opener at Charlotte. With the victory, he automatically advances to the Round of 8, which begins at Martinsville on Oct. 29.

Truex will carry at least his 64 playoff points – 30 for his six wins, 19 for his 19 stage wins and 15 for his regular season championship – into the Round of 8. He can still earn even more in the upcoming races at Talladega and Kansas.

Truex’s victory was his fifth at a 1.5-mile track this season, tying Carl Edwards (2008) for the most in a year. He still has races at Kansas, Texas and Homestead to break Edwards’ mark.

The No. 78 Toyota driver has led 1,977 laps this season – 23 away from 2,00. If he accomplishes the feat, he will become only the fourth driver since 2000 to lead 2,000 or more laps in a single season, joining Kevin Harvick (2015 – 2,294 laps led and 2014 – 2,137 laps led), Jimmie Johnson (2009 – 2,238 laps led) and Jeff Gordon (2001 – 2,320 laps led).

In the Modern Era (1972 to Present), only 11 drivers have led 2,000 or more laps in a single season.

Truex leads the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in wins (six), top fives (14, tied with Kyle Larson), top 10s (21), stage wins (19), average running position (7.3), driver rating (115.7), fastest laps run (1,143, 16.4%) and laps led (1,977, 22.7%).

Elliott Scores Another Runner-Up Finish
Chase Elliott scored his second consecutive runner-up finish and third of the Playoffs in Sunday’s Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. As a result, he shot up from ninth on the Playoff leaderboard to fourth (16 points above Matt Kenseth on the cutoff line).

The runner-up marked the sixth career second-place showing for Elliott, who is still trying to win his first race.

Elliott will try to tackle Talladega this weekend, where he has a career-best finish at the track of fifth (spring 2016). He finished 12th (fall 2016) and 30th (spring 2017) in his other two starts at the 2.66-mile behemoth.

Stenhouse Goes For Third Restrictor-Plate Win Of The Season
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is trying to establish himself as the new restrictor-plate ace in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this season. He took the checkered flag in the May Talladega race and the July Daytona contest.

He’ll go for the Talladega sweep and his third restrictor-plate win of the season in Sunday’s Alabama 500.

Stenhouse’s success at Talladega shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. He has three top fives, five top 10s and a 10.4 average finish at the Alabama track.

A win on Sunday would automatically advance Stenhouse to the Round of 8. Currently, he sits last on the Playoff leaderboard, 10 points behind Jamie McMurray on the cutoff line.

Talladega has been swept seven times by six different drivers: Pete Hamilton (1970), Buddy Baker (1975), Darrell Waltrip (1982), Dale Earnhardt (1990, 1999), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2002) and Jeff Gordon (2007).

Talladega Knight: Earnhardt Jr. Takes Final Ride At Alabama Track
No driver is more beloved at Talladega than Dale Earnhardt Jr.

On Sunday, the restrictor-plate ace will make his last start at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

In 34 starts at Talladega, Earnhardt boasts six wins, 12 top fives, 16 top 10s and a 15.6 average finish. His 91.0 driver rating at the Alabama track leads active drivers who have more than three starts there.

Earnhardt ranks sixth all-time in career superspeedway wins with 10 (six at Talladega and four at Daytona). Every eligible driver in the top 11 is in the NASCAR Hall of Fame: Dale Earnhardt (13 superspeedway wins), Cale Yarborough (12), Jeff Gordon (not yet eligible, 12), Richard Petty (12), David Pearson (11), Bobby Allison (10), Earnhardt Jr. (not yet eligible, 10) Fireball Roberts (seven), Bill Elliott (six), Buddy Baker (six), Dale Jarrett (six).

Keselowski Can Produce Another Wild ‘Dega Finish
Brad Keselowski is no stranger to success at Talladega. In fact, he’s had some wild finishes at the 2.66-mile Alabama track.

In 2009, the No. 2 Ford driver won his first career race at Talladega for Phoenix Racing, turning Carl Edwards on the final lap to take the checkered flag.

In 2014, Keselowski entered the Talladega Playoff race in a "win or go home" situation following a run-in the previous weekend with Matt Kenseth at Charlotte. Keselowski blocked out the distractions and won the race to make the Round of 8.

The Team Penske driver will attempt to muster some of the same magic for Sunday’s Alabama 500. He is currently 10th on the Playoff leaderboard – two points behind Jamie McMurray on the cutoff line.

Keselowski boasts four wins, six top fives, 10 top 10s and a 14.9 average finish in 17 career starts at Talladega.

Five First-Time Winners This Season Are Most Since 2014
Alex Bowman’s Charlotte Motor Speedway victory this past weekend made him the fifth different first-time winner of the 2017 NASCAR XFINITY Series season; which is the most since 2014 (five first-time winners). The series record for first-time winners was set in the inaugural season (1982) with 14 first-time winners. Since then, the next most first-time winners in a single NASCAR XFINITY Series season is six and it has happened seven times (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 2002, 2004 and 2006).

So far, this season we have witnessed Ryan Preece (Iowa), Jeremy Clements (Road America), Tyler Reddick (Kentucky), William Byron (Iowa) and Alex Bowman (Charlotte) all get their first career series win.

Which begs the question, could we see a record tying sixth first time winner in 2017?

There is a good chance we do. Four of the remaining eight Playoff drivers have yet to win in the NASCAR XFINITY Series – Brennan Poole, Daniel Hemric, Cole Custer and Matt Tifft.

The next stop on the NASCAR XFINITY Series Playoff schedule is Kansas Speedway. If a first-time winner captures the checkered flag on October 21 at Kansas, it will be quite the feat, as it will be the first time a driver has captured his first career series win at Kansas.

A Five-Season Look At The Top Three Powerhouse Winning Organizations
Over the last five seasons (2013-Present) nine different team organizations have visited Victory Lane in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. This season, we have seen seven of the nine organizations get one or more drivers a win – Joe Gibbs Racing (10 wins), Team Penske (six), Chip Ganassi Racing (five), JR Motorsports (five), Biagi-DenBeste Racing (one), Jeremy Clements Racing (one) and Roush Fenway Racing (one).

Leading the series in wins over the last five seasons (2013-Present) is Joe Gibbs Racing with 64 victories out of a possible 161 races for a winning percentage of 39.8%. The 68 wins were the result of eight different drivers capturing the checkered flag – Kyle Busch (40 wins), Erik Jones (eight), Denny Hamlin (six), Daniel Suarez (three), Matt Kenseth (three), Sam Hornish Jr. (three), Elliott Sadler (one) and Ryan Preece (one).

Next on the list of winning organizations over the last five years in the NASCAR XFINITY Series is Team Penske with 36 wins out of a possible 161 and a winning percentage of 22.4%. The 36 wins came from the steady hands of five different drivers – Brad Keselowski (16 wins), Joey Logano (10), Ryan Blaney (six), AJ Allmendinger (two) and Sam Hornish Jr. (two).

The organization with the third-most wins over the last five seasons in the NASCAR XFINITY Series is JR Motorsports with 26 victories out of a possible 161 races; a winning percentage of 16.1%. The 26 wins came from eight different drivers – Kevin Harvick (six wins), Chase Elliott (five), Regan Smith (five), Elliott Sadler (three), William Byron (three), Justin Allgaier (two), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (one) and Kasey Kahne (one).

NASCAR XFINITY Series Etc.
Milestones: At Kansas on Oct. 21, Elliott Sadler (358 series starts) will tie Mike Bliss (359 series starts) for 10th on the all-time NASCAR XFINITY Series starts list. Kenny Wallace currently holds the record for the most all-time series starts with 547. Elliott Sadler made his first series start at South Boston back in 1995, driving a car owned by his mother, Bell.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

2017 Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Grant Enfinger is the defending race winner, while 2017 Playoffs contenders Christopher Bell (sixth) and Johnny Sauter (seventh) both finished inside the top-10.

Playoff Bubble Drivers At Talladega
As the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoff field gears for its first elimination race of the post-season at Talladega Superspeedway, below is an outlook of how the bubble drivers have performed this season and at the superspeedway if they’ve registered a start:

Chase Briscoe: The Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender and Brad Keselowski Racing driver currently sits 10 points above the cutoff line. Briscoe has been on a tear all season – finishing top-25 or better in every race this year. He’s coming off a third-place finish at Las Vegas and has never made a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Talladega.

Austin Cindric: Also a Brad Keselowski Racing driver and a Sunoco Rookie, Austin Cindric sits eight points above the cutoff line heading into Talladega. Cindric has been stout during his Playoffs run as he has finishes of eighth (New Hampshire) and fourth (Las Vegas). He has one career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Talladega – he finished 20th in this race a year ago in the No. 2 Brad Keselowski Racing Ford.

Kaz Grala: Having a strong Sunoco Rookie season for GMS Racing, Kaz Grala sits eight points below the Round of 8 Playoffs bubble. Grala has finished top-10 or better in four consecutive races and will need a strong finish, plus some help, to stay in the 2017 Playoffs. Grala will be making his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Talladega this weekend.

John Hunter Nemechek: Due to mechanical trouble in the opening race of the Round of 8, John Hunter Nemechek is 14 points below the cutoff line heading into Talladega. He will need some help to get in the Round of 6 on points if he doesn’t win the race. Nemechek has two career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at Talladega. He finished 32nd there last year due to an engine issue and 11th there in 2015.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs Clinch Scenarios At Talladega
  • Matt Crafton (0 Wins, 2101 Points): can clinch this weekend on points with 37 points and a new winner.  If there is a repeat winner, he would clinch on points with 29 points.  He can also clinch with a win this weekend.
  • Johnny Sauter (0 Wins, 2098 Points): can clinch this weekend on points with 40 points and a new winner.  If there is a repeat winner, he would clinch on points with 32 Points. He can also clinch with a win this weekend.
  • Chase Briscoe (0 Wins, 2084 Points): can clinch this weekend on points with 54 Points and a new winner.  If there is a repeat winner, he would clinch on points with 46 Points. He can also clinch with a win this weekend.

Jimmie Johnson is the defending race winner. The Playoffs drivers who have visited Victory Lane at Charlotte in the past are: Johnson (eight wins, track record), Harvick (three), Kenseth (two), McMurray (two), Keselowski (one), Truex (one).

Busch Goes For Third Consecutive Win And A Victory At All Active Tracks
If Kyle Busch wins Sunday’s Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, not only will he earn his third consecutive victory and an automatic berth in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 8, but he’ll also become the first driver to boast a checkered flag at every active Cup track.

Despite never winning a points race at Charlotte, Busch has quality Loop Data stats at the 1.5-mile track. His average running position (9.7) and driver rating (105.6) ranks second best among active drivers at Charlotte. In 27 Queen City starts, Busch owns 11 top fives, 16 top 10s and a 15.0 average finish. He placed runner-up in this year’s Coca-Cola 600.

The last driver to record three consecutive victories was Joey Logano in 2015 when he won three straight playoff races in a sweep of the Round of 12. Busch also won three races in a row in 2015.

King Of Queen City: Johnson Attempts To Add To Record 8 Charlotte Wins
Jimmie Johnson will attempt to add to his record of eight Charlotte wins in Sunday’s Bank of America 500. The No. 48 Chevrolet driver has taken the checkered flag in the Queen City fall race four times, including last season.

In 32 career starts at Charlotte, Johnson also claims 15 top fives, 19 top 10s and a 12.7 average finish. He owns the top Charlotte driver rating (110.4) and average running position (8.0) of all Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers.

Johnson’s third-place finish at Dover last weekend marked his first top-five showing since his win at Dover in June.

Larson, Blaney, McMurray, Stenhouse Advance To Round Of 12 For First Time
The Round of 16 of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs was no problem for postseason first-timers Ryan Blaney and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Both drivers navigated their way into the Round of 12.

Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray made it to the Round of 12 for their first time in their second and third Playoffs, respectively.

The Round of 12 will likely be much tougher. Larson sits 26 points above Blaney on the cutoff line, but Stenhouse only has a two-point edge over Blaney for the final transfer spot entering the Round of 12. McMurray starts the Round of 12 facing a seven-point deficit for the final transfer berth.

In eight career starts at Charlotte, Larson has one top five, two top 10s and a 19.8 average finish.

Blaney has never finished better than 14th at Charlotte in his five career races there, while Stenhouse owns a high finish of 13th in 11 Queen City appearances.

McMurray has had the most success at the 1.5-mile track. In 30 career starts, he claims two wins, seven top fives, 11 top 10s and a 16.2 average finish. He also won the non-points-paying All-Star Race at Charlotte in 2014.

Another Runner-Up For Elliott
Chase Elliott relinquished the lead to Kyle Busch just before the final go-around of last Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover, finishing second despite leading a race-high 138 laps.

The finish marked the fifth runner-up of Elliott’s career. He continues to hunt down his first win.

Still, Elliott produced a strong Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 16 with two runner-ups (one encumbered at Chicagoland) and an 11th-place finish. He advances to the Round of 12 opener sitting 10th on the Playoff leaderboard – a mere four points behind Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the final transfer spot.

Plenty of notable drivers recorded more runner-ups than Elliott before their first win, including NASCAR Hall of Famers Bill Elliott (Chase’s father, eight runner-ups), Glenn Wood (six) and Mark Martin (six). NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip logged four second-place showings before his first victory.

In four career starts at Charlotte, Elliott has a high finish of eighth. He crashed out of his last two races at the 1.5-mile track after starting both third. He led 103 laps in last year’s Bank of America 500.

A Spoiler At Charlotte?
As has been mentioned many times before, a driver doesn’t need to be a Playoffs contender to win a race. Many drivers who are not championship-eligible have won in the past at Charlotte. The group includes: Kasey Kahne (4), Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano and Austin Dillon.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

The Rhodes To Victory
ThorSport Racing driver and 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs contender Ben Rhodes captured his first career victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when he won the Las Vegas 350.

The win was special for Rhodes. Not only was it his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory in 45 races, it also advanced him into the Round of 6 – furthering his shot at a championship this season.

Rhodes was the final driver into the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs – elbowing past Ryan Truex by inches. Now, Rhodes joins Kyle Busch Motorsports’ Christopher Bell as the only two drivers currently locked into the next round of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs.

Rhodes was happy about the win following Las Vegas, but knows it proved more to the rest of the Playoffs field.

"We proved tonight that we belong in the Playoffs after we were so close to getting into it from a couple of different times from wins. And then we got in by a tie and we’re proving we belong here. Now we’re going to the Round of 6 and we want to go to Homestead."

Briscoe Scores Stage Win At Las Vegas
Brad Keselowski Racing driver and Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Chase Briscoe captured his second stage win of 2017 when he won Stage 1 of the Las Vegas 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Briscoe would go on to finish third in the race and sits fourth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs standings through two Playoff races.

Briscoe’s third-place finish marked his seventh top five of the 2017 season and 11th top 10. He has yet to finish outside the top 25 all season.

Briscoe and ThorSport’s Grant Enfinger are tied atop the Sunoco Rookie of the Year points standings, 208-208.

Truex Takes Second Keystone Light Pole
Ryan Truex won the Keystone Light Pole at Las Vegas Motor Speedway – scoring his second pole in his last three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races. His other pole was won at Chicagoland Speedway.

His two pole wins this season are the most poles he’s ever won in a single season of his NASCAR national series career.

Despite missing the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs, Truex remains a resilient driver and has finished top-20 or better in eight consecutive races.

Truex has put Hattori Racing on the map this season and will look to finish the 2017 season strong.

Playoffs Finishers At Las Vegas
With Ben Rhodes winning the Las Vegas 350 and Chase Briscoe scoring third in the race – here is how the entire 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs field finished at Las Vegas Motor Speedway:

1st – Ben Rhodes
2nd – Christopher Bell
3rd – Chase Briscoe
4th – Austin Cindric
5th – Kaz Grala
7th – Matt Crafton
8th – John Hunter Nemechek
10th – Johnny Sauter

Following his 20th-place finish in the opening race of the Round of 8 at New Hampshire, John Hunter Nemechek rebounded at Las Vegas and scored an eighth-place finish. He still remains eighth in the Playoffs standings.

Reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Johnny Sauter had some issues in the Las Vegas 350. He cut a tire and was caught speeding on pit road twice in the early stages of the race. He clawed back for a 10th-place finish and sits fourth in the Playoffs standings.

Helio Castroneves joins Team Penske's IMSA lineup

MOORESVILLE, NC -- Team Penske today announced that longtime winning INDYCAR driver Helio Castroneves will join the team’s new Acura Team Penske program that will begin racing in the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Castroneves will join previously-announced drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron in racing one of two Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype International (DPi) entries next season. Acura Team Penske’s final full-time and endurance drivers will be announced at a later date.

Castroneves will officially return to sport car competition, joining fellow Team Penske drivers Montoya and Simon Pagenaud, at this weekend’s 20th Anniversary Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta driving an ORECA-07.  The team will make its competition debut with the new Acura prototype sports cars at IMSA’s 2018 season-opening Rolex 24 race at Daytona in January.

In addition to his sport car duties, Castroneves is expected to continue to compete for Team Penske in next May’s Indianapolis 500 as the popular Brazilian driver continues his quest to become a four-time winner of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

“Helio has been a valuable member of Team Penske for almost 20 years and we are looking forward to sharing more success together,” said Roger Penske. “Competitors like Helio, Rick Mears and Mark Donohue are what have made Team Penske what it is today. This represents a new challenge for him and I know he is excited about the opportunity. Having established winning drivers like Helio and Juan, teaming up with young and talented racers that know the series like Dane Cameron, will help give our new sports car program a solid foundation as we head into the 2018 season.”

Castroneves will transition to the Team Penske sports car program after 18 successful seasons with the organization’s Verizon IndyCar Series team. Castroneves finished fourth in this year’s Championship standings, marking the 14th time in his career that he has finished inside the top-five in the season-ending rankings. Over the course of his 20-year INDYCAR career, Castroneves has produced 30 wins and 50 pole positions, including one win and three poles won in 2017.

Considered one of the all-time greats in INDYCAR history, Castroneves has earned more wins than any other driver in the history of Team Penske’s championship open-wheel racing program. He’s produced three victories in the Indianapolis 500, two of which came back-to-back in his first two starts at Indy in 2001 and 2002. He last won at Indianapolis in 2009 and he’s come remarkably close to earning a record-tying fourth Indy 500 win, finishing second two times over the last four seasons.

In addition to his remarkable INDYCAR success, Castroneves has also made five starts for Team Penske in sports car competition as he produced two poles, three podium finishes and a class victory in the 2008 Petit Le Mans event.

“I’ve been fortunate to achieve a lot of my personal goals with Team Penske over the years,” said Castroneves, who is also the longest-tenured driver in team history. “Helping Roger, the team and everyone with Acura start this program and build it from the ground up will be another big challenge and a great opportunity in my career. I am proud of everything we have accomplished together in INDYCAR and now I am focused on helping to develop the ARX-05 to try and win the 24 Hours of Daytona and the IMSA championship in 2018 with Acura.

“I’m also excited to get a chance to race again for Team Penske at the Indianapolis 500. That race is near and dear to my heart and trying to become the fourth four-time winner is something I really want to accomplish in my career.  We’ve come so close the last few years and with this team, I know we will have a great opportunity to try and make some history.”

The Acura ARX-05 [Acura Racing eXperimental, generation 5] is the latest in a line of endurance prototypes to be fielded by the company dating back to 1991, just five years after the 1986 launch of the Acura brand.  Based on the very successful ORECA 07 chassis, the new ARX-05 prototype features Acura-specific bodywork and utilizes the race-proven, production-based Acura AR35TT twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine.

The multi-year program will be administered by Honda Performance Development, the racing arm for both Acura Motorsports and Honda Racing in North America.
