Simon Pagenaud wins 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series championship

SONOMA, CA – In a GoPro Grand Prix win on Sunday, Simon Pagenaud also won the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series championship at the Sonoma Raceway in Wine Country, a little town we know as Sonoma California.

The championship is the first in the series for Pagenaud, and the 14th title for his racing team Team Penske.

To win the championship, Pagenaud had to hold off his Team Penske teammate Will Power.

Pagenaud went into Sunday's race with a 44-point lead over Power, but still remembered that the IndyCar season finale pays double points.

Power was 8 laps down by the time he rejoined the race after a full-course yellow, which ruined his hopes of winning his second championship.

"If I hadn't won a championship, it would have been a pretty bad day," confessed Power, who won the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2014. "But it's been a great year... I am happy seeing [Pagenaud] win a championship."

Graham Rahal finished second, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya,  Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi, Josef Newgarden, Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti, Charlie Kimball and Sebastian Bourdais.

The standings ended in a 1-2-3 points standings finish for Team Penske. Pagenaud, Power, and Castroneves rounded out that Top-3.

The 2017 IndyCar Series kicks off on March 12 on the Streets of St. Petersburg.
