DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Garry Wiltrout proved that age can’t slow him down and stop him from beating the younger guys.
Wiltrout, 50, from Somerset, Pennsylvania, won his third Motordrome Speedway championship trophy and his fourth championship overall.
“This has been a dream season,” said Wiltrout. “We picked up more wins and had no bad luck. Usually, you have a few engine problems or get in a few wrecks, but we didn’t experience any of that this year.”
Wiltrout piloted his No. 95 Stone and Company/Scottdale Lumber/ Franjo/ Meegan Ford to 10 wins and 17 top fives this season to finish atop the Late Model standings at the .4-mile semi-banked oval in Smithton, Pennsylvania.
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series veteran, finished 32 points ahead of his teammate Bobby Henry to earn the track title (1006-974).
“This season was a lot of fun.” Wiltrout said. “It’s been one of the best seasons of my 22-year career. We’ve had a pretty good stretch the past couple years. To earn 10 victories was unbelievable. I have to give credit to my guys, they do all the hard work while I do the easy part.”
Wiltrout was attending races with friends years ago when he decided to buy a street stock and give racing a try.
“I would always be helping my friends with their cars,” Wiltrout said. “One day I just decided to start competing.”
He joined R&R Motorsports over a dozen years ago and hasn’t looked back. Since joining the team, he has been a top-10 finisher in Motordrome’s late model points race.
Wiltrout was crowned the Motordrome champion in 2002 and 2013 and collected the Jennerstown (Pennsylvania) Speedway title in 2004.
“I go out there wanting to win,” Wiltrout said. “I don’t think about the points or potential championships. The only thing on my mind is winning, it’s always been that way and it always will.”
He credits much of this year’s success to his R&R Motorsports team.
“I have to thank Richard and Joan and of course my entire team,” said Wiltrout. “Without all of them and my sponsors, this season and championship wouldn’t have been possible.”
R&R Motorsports owned by Rich and Joan Pologruto. Wiltrout also works for the Pologruto’s business, Speclin Emergency Vehicle Sales and Serivice, in Scottdale, Pennsylvania.
The veteran racer already has big plans for next season.
“I want both championships next season,” Wiltrout said. “My plans are to come back next year and win the Motordrome title as well as the Pennsylvania championship.”
Wiltrout will be honored at the Motordrome Speedway Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Turkeytown Fire Hall in West Newton, Pennsylvania.
