On Tuesday, NASCAR announced its new charter system. In case you're confused by it (like I was at first), I'm here to give you a basic rundown of how it works.
Charters were given to teams that have qualifiedf for every race since 2013. The amount of charters that were given were 36, and with charters, those teams are guaranteed a spot in the upcoming race. Also, the driver limit per race has been shortened from 43 to 40.
Also, teams can sell and buy charters. Why would you sell? Because it takes off a lot of financial burden off your race team. Why would you buy? Well, not only would it guarantee the driver a spot in the race, but it guarantees sponsors that they will be competing on a team's car in the race.
The charter system is a very interesting tool that will affect the business side of NASCAR, but will not affect the racing sider in any way.
