Buddy Baker's Unfortunate Passing

UNB! Network Staff Report

The Ultimate NASCAR Blog is saddened to pass on the terrible news of Buddy Baker, NASCAR Hall-Of-Famer and Daytona 500 champion, who has died at the age of 74.

Baker had announced on his SuriusXM NASCAR Radio show "The Late Shift" that he had a huge tumor in his lung. The station announced early Monday morning that Baker has unfortunately passed away after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Baker's achievements include victories in the Coca Cola 600 in 1968, 1972, and 1973,  a Daytona 500 victory in 1980, a win in the 1970 Southern 500, and 19 Sprint Cup victories in his career.

He ran his first NASCAR race in 1959, and his last race 33 years later in 1992.

He was the first NASCAR driver to exceed 200 MPH on a closed race course when he did it in 1970 at Talladega Superspeedway

In 1998, he was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers.

We pass on our prayers and best wishes to Baker family and their friends.
