Blown Tire Derails Brandon McReynolds at Iowa Speedway

NEWTON, IOWA (July 31, 2016) – Brandon McReynolds entered Iowa Speedway with much excitement as he was back behind the wheel of the No. 24 JGL Racing Young Guns Toyota for the second time this season.  That excitement vanished on lap 149 as a blown left rear tire would send Brandon and his Toyota hard into the turn one wall.  The devastating incident would end Brandon’s night and relegate him to a disappointing 32nd place finish in the running of the US Cellular 250.

“Man, I really hate we had that tire failure – a really tough way to end the night,” said McReynolds.  “Our No. 24 Toyota was getting better there in the second half of the race and I had moved around and worked on my line a little.  I think we had a really good chance at a top-15 finish but an unlucky break prevented that from happening.”

Brandon would start the 250-lap event from the 18th position as a result of his qualifying effort earlier in the day.  In the opening laps Brandon would radio his crew that his No. 24 Toyota wasn’t too bad and that he was moving around and trying different lines on the track.  A couple of trips down pit road throughout the event would allow for some minor adjustments which helped McReynolds as he was knocking on the door of the top-15 with about 100 laps left in the race.  Unfortunately the night would end abruptly and violently for Brandon as his left rear tire blew as he dove down into turn one sending the No. 24 Young Guns Toyota into the outside wall.

“I can’t thank everyone at JGL Racing enough for this opportunity to drive the No. 24 Toyota again,” added Brandon.  “This was a great learning experience for me and one that I look forward to expanding on in the future.”

The NASCAR XFINITY Series will next head to Watkins Glen International for the first road course event of the season. The running of the Zippo 200 will be Saturday August 6th and can be seen LIVE on CNBC and NBC Sports Live Extra online at 2:00 pm ET.  It can also be heard on Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM Channel 90.

Drew Herring Scores Solid 12th Place Finish in Iowa

NEWTON, IOWA (July 31, 2016) – Drew Herring has been very successful in NASCAR XFINITY Series competition at Iowa Speedway and Saturday night he continued that trend. Herring would once again join the JGL Racing organization as he piloted their No. 28 Toyota to a solid 12th place finish in the running of the US Cellular 250 at the Newton, Iowa track.

“Our No. 28 Toyota was pretty strong right off the trailer on Friday,” said Herring.  “We got in a decent qualifying run which had us starting towards the front.  On the track we were pretty good but unfortunately we lost too many valuable spots on pit road.  I think at worst we had an eighthplace car and maybe even a top-five one.  When we lost those positions on pit road I was forced to really use my stuff up to try and gain them back which ultimately prevented us from getting the finish we deserved.”

Drew would start the 250-lap event from the ninth position as a result of his strong qualifying effort.  The early portion of the race would see the No. 28 Toyota battle inside the top-10 while battling a loose in and tight in the center condition.  A trip down pit road would allow for some key adjustments however the loss of valuable track position would stall the progress.

The second half of the event would see Herring flex his muscles as he would power his way solidly back inside the top-10.  The last caution of the day would once again prove costly with the pit stop losing the No. 28 Toyota five valuable spots.  Herring would do all that he could to gain back the spots but in doing so would be forced to use up his tires.  In the end, Drew would settle for a solid 12th place finish with thoughts of what could have been a much better outcome.

“With this being a stand along event the team didn’t have their normal pit crew here this weekend,” added Drew.  “I want to thank James Whitener (owner) and everyone at JGL Racing for this opportunity to drive for them once again.  They gave me a strong race car this week and I think it showed on the track.  Hopefully I will get another opportunity at some point in the future.”

Rain at Pocono Raceway postpones Sprint Cup race

Intermittent fits of rain postponed the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway to an 11 a.m. ET Monday start.

Wet weather moved into the area Saturday evening, and it was raining hard Sunday morning as teams went through pre-race inspection. A fleet of Air Titan 2.0 trucks were on hand to get the track ready as the clouds broke near the scheduled 1:30 p.m. ET start time, but rain began to fall again at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET to halt the track-drying process.

The rescheduled 400-mile event will be broadcast on NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM.

Martin Truex Jr. is the polesitter for the 21st of 36 points-paying races of the Sprint Cup season. Truex, who prevailed in Friday's Coors Light Pole Qualifying, is one of five drivers who can clinch a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with a victory at Pocono.

The series' first stop at the 2.5-mile triangular track was delayed until Monday due to rain, and Kurt Busch went on to find Victory Lane. This is the first time in a single year that both Pocono races have been postponed to the next day.

Rain also affected on-track activities early Saturday, canceling qualifying for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. William Byron went on to win the Pocono Mountains 150 later Saturday.

Erik Jones wins XFINITY race

Erik Jones won the US Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway on Saturday. It is his 5th XFINITY Series win and 3rd of the year. Jones led 154 of the 250 laps but had to take the lead from Ty Dillon with 15 laps to go to get the win.

Dillon finished second, followed by Elliott Sadler, Brennan Poole, Dakoda Armstrong, Sam Hornish, Jr., Justin Allgaier, Brad Keselowski, Josh Berry, and Ryan Reed.

Pole sitter Daniel Suarez finished 30th. He suffered front-end damage after getting into the back of Josh Berry on a restart and did not finish.

There were 6 cautions for 29 laps and 7 lead changes among 4 leaders.

The average speed was 104.401mph.

Pagenaud takes P1 award with record lap at Mid-Ohio

LEXINGTON, Ohio – As Verizon IndyCar Series teams left Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course today, the results seemed almost unsurprising. For the sixth time in 2016, Simon Pagenaud won the Verizon P1 Award, and for the sixth time in 2016, a new track record was set.

After making his eighth Firestone Fast Six appearance in as many tries this season (the only driver to do so), Pagenaud snatched the pole position for The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio from teammate Will Power on his final lap with a time of 1 minute, 3.8700 seconds (127.271 mph).

"I didn't know about that (new track record),” said Pagenaud, driver of the No. 22 PPG Automotive Refinish Team Penske Chevrolet who now leads Power in the championship by 48 points with five races to go. “That is good. The PPG car has been really good this weekend."

Pagenaud revealed he has been dealing with a lower back problem since Friday, which hampered him throughout the day but didn’t stop him from securing the eighth pole of his Indy car career.

“(Qualifying) was more on me really because I have been struggling a little bit with my really bad lower back,” said the Frenchman. “We put those Firestone red tires on and, again, the car was beautiful.”

Contributing to several surprises on the day was the anticipation of rain, which was expected to influence qualifying but never arrived in anything more than a few sprinkles in Segment 2.

“That was an interesting qualifying,” said Pagenaud. “The expectation of rain, no rain. There were some drops in Q2 that made it more difficult.”

“It was interesting,” said 2012 series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, “especially when it started sprinkling there in the back because the patches through (Turns) 4, 5, 6 started to get pretty slick.”

Hunter-Reay qualified fourth for Andretti Autosport in the No. 28 DHL Honda, his best start since the second race of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit in June.

“It was tough to predict every time you came through what it would be, how much you can get away with,” he said. “Those sessions like that as a driver put you on edge, but they end up being the most fun because you're kind of searching around looking for that grip.”

Pagenaud and Power (No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet) will make up the front row for Sunday’s 90-lap race on the 2.258-mile permanent road course, as the two continue their battle for the Verizon IndyCar Series championship and Astor Cup. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden (No. 21 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet) and Hunter-Reay make up the second row, with Charlie Kimball (No. 83 Tresiba Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet) and Graham Rahal (No. 15 Steak ‘n Shake Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda) in Row 3.

Perhaps of bigger shock than the lack of rain was the struggle of Chip Ganassi Racing after putting all four cars in the top eight in this morning’s practice. Only Kimball made the Firestone Fast Six, while five-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon (No. 9 Target Chevrolet) qualified 11th. Max Chilton (No. 8 Gallagher Chevrolet) and Tony Kanaan (No. 10 NTT Data Chevrolet) will make up Row 7 after failing to make it out of Segment 1 of knockout qualifying.

“I was shocked,” said Kimball, who won at Mid-Ohio in 2013. “We were sitting there (on team radio), and it's like, ‘OK, who's in the Fast Six?’ I was like, ‘Dixon,’ they're like, ‘No, no, Dix didn't make it.’”

Dixon attributed his starting position to a miscommunication about track conditions as light rain came through and passed over part of the circuit.

“We waited too much,” said the four-time series champion. “The team thought we would be safe (to make the Firestone Fast Six). Coming into the pits, I thought it was getting faster on track. The rain was getting lighter. The times picked up drastically in the end there, which hung us out. We just had a miscue in communication there. It’s kind of how our season has gone so far.”

Which didn’t make it any less stunning for his teammate.

“Around here, it's abnormal,” said Kimball, “which makes me really nervous for tomorrow because when Scott drives angry, he drives really fast.”

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course plays host to its 32nd Indy car race with Sunday’s Honda Indy 200. A morning warmup practice begins at 10:15 a.m. ET and will stream live on RaceControl.IndyCar.com. Coverage of the 90-lap race begins at 2 p.m. ET on CNBC and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network, with a re-air on NBCSN at 5:30 p.m. ET.

And don’t forget to catch five Verizon IndyCar Series stars – Power, Kanaan, Helio Castroneves, James Hinchcliffe and Conor Daly – take on a team of Sports Illustrated swimsuit models in the newest episode of the hit game show “Celebrity Family Feud” that airs at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Pennsylvania 400: Rain may postpone Pocono NASCAR race for second timethis year

Another postponement may be in store at Pocono Raceway as widespread showers and thunderstorms threaten northeastern Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Following a hot and dry race last weekend at the Brickyard in Indianapolis, NASCAR fans will head to Long Pond, Pennsylvania, this weekend for what will likely be a stormy, cooler event.

"Sunshine will be nearly invisible for the Pennsylvania 400 as there will be a cloudy, unsettled weather pattern for Sunday's race," AccuWeather Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski said.

A storm moving across the Ohio Valley will tap into moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and lead to widespread showers and thunderstorms during the second half of the weekend. Those with plans to attend race activities will need to bring along rain gear.

Rain and thunder can occur at any time from Saturday afternoon through Sunday, including for the Camping World Truck Series Race on Saturday.

"While it probably will not rain continuously during Saturday afternoon and Sunday, track drying time between the showers may be limited," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

"The greatest chance of a severe thunderstorm with strong winds, flash flooding and frequent lightning strikes is during late Saturday afternoon and evening," Sosnowski said.

If thunder is heard, seek shelter immediately.

The Sprint Cup race is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday.

"Rain delays prior to and during the Sunday race are a possibility," Pydynowski said.

The June 2016 race was postponed by a day, due to rain.

With the clouds and rain, temperatures will top out in the lower 70s F on Sunday. Highs this time of year in the Poconos are typically in the upper 70s to near 80 F.

Downpours could create areas of flooding over the infield and surrounding parking areas outside of the race track.

Should the Sprint Cup race be postponed until Monday, spotty showers and thunderstorms may still linger across eastern Pennsylvania. However, Monday does not look to be a washout.

Rain postponed the Axalta ‘We Paint Winners' 400 at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, June 5. Over 0.50 of an inch of rain fell in the Poconos with highs stuck in the 60s. Drier and warmer weather on Monday, June 6, allowed the race to go on.

Tom Hessert Knows Importance of Strategy at Pocono; Ready for ARCA’s ModSpace 150

CONCORD, NC (July 27, 2016) – Cherry Hill, New Jersey’s Tom Hessert will make the short drive from his home outside Philadelphia to compete in this weekend’s ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards ModSpace 150 at Pocono Raceway.

The ModSpace 150 this Friday at Pocono marks Hessert’s 17th career start on the Pocono triangle. It’s also the 63rd time ARCA has visited the famed facility since 1983 and the second time this season.

In June during the series’ first season visit, Hessert and his No.25 Venturini Motorsports team gambled on pit strategy but was forced to make a late pit stop for fuel relinquishing their fifth place running position and ultimately settling for a 15th place finishing spot. This week’s return to Pocono will undoubtedly come down to pit strategy once again as the race around the 2.5-mile ‘Tricky Triangle” is scheduled 20-laps/50 miles shorter than the Spring event.

“The second time around at Pocono is always a strategy race with the shorter mileage,” says Hessert. “Qualifying and track position will be very important this week. It’s a one (pit) stop race so staying up front will be the key to success.”

Hessert, with mixed results at Pocono over the course of his nine year career, has managed four top-5 and seven top-10 finishes with his best finish of third coming in 2014.

Currently fourth in ARCA’s driver point standings, Hessert looks to rebound at Pocono before making the late summer push which includes two dirt track races sandwiched in between two short track events leading into mid-September.

Practice for the ModSpace 150 is from 9:30 A.M. to 10:55 A.M. Friday morning July 29 with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell following at 2:00 P.M. The Friday late afternoon ModSpace 150 is live on FOX SPORTS 1 (FS1) at 5:30 P.M. Eastern. All on-track activity will be featured in live Timing & Scoring and live Chat at arcaracing.com.

Dalton Sargeant Going Back to Pocono with Confidence and Experience

CONCORD, NC (July 27, 2016) – Of all the race tracks Dalton Sargeant has raced throughout his young, yet expansive career, the 18-year driver puts Pocono Raceway amongst his favorites of all-time.

Looking to parlay one of his favorite tracks into success, Sargeant is confident in his ability heading into this weekend’s ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards return to Pocono for Friday afternoon’s ModSpace 150.

Sargeant, who earned a fourth-place finish back in June during his first appearance at Pocono, believes the experience gained earlier in the season will provide him with the edge needed to improve this second time around.

“I can’t wait to go back. I learned so much my first time and have studied film from the first race to see where I can improve. I’m looking forward to taking my experience back to Pocono and coming out with a better result,” said Sargeant.

“It’s such a unique track. Pocono teaches drivers a little bit of everything. It carries so much speed and you have to learn to take care of your car. It has three different corners so you have to learn three different entry points and three different exit strategies. Every track is challenging but Pocono demands the ultimate concentration. The smallest adjustments one way or another around the track makes all the difference.”

Running all but five ARCA series events on this year’s schedule, Sargeant has already competed in nine of the series 12-events - posting six top-5 and eight top-10 finishes.

Pocono is one of two tracks (along with Salem Speedway) the ARCA Series visits more than once during the course of the 20-race season.

Sargeant will get his chance to improve and hopes to redeem last week’s disappointing finish, his first outside the top-10, when he returns to Pocono this week with his Venturini Motorsports prepared No.55 Toyota Racing Development – Windows 10 Toyota.

This week’s Pocono race also is the fifth leg of the General Tire Superspeedway Challenge. Sargeant and his No.55 team currently lead the tight battle by 15-points over Chase Briscoe and the No.77 Cunningham Motorsports team.

The General Tire Superspeedway Challenge, a championship within the overall season championship, is an accumulation of points from all of ARCA's Superspeedway events each year. This year's Superspeedway championship includes races at Daytona, Talladega, both Poconos, Michigan, Chicagoland, Kentucky and Kansas.

Practice for the ModSpace 150 is from 9:30 A.M. to 10:55 A.M. Friday morning July 29, with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell following at 2:00 P.M. The Friday late afternoon ModSpace 150 is live on FOX SPORTS 1 (FS1) at 5:30 P.M. Eastern. All on-track activity will be featured in live Timing & Scoring and live Chat at arcaracing.com.

Christopher Bell Prepared for Double Duty Action at Pocono Raceway; ARCA and NASCAR Truck Series Starts Await

CONCORD, NC (July 26, 2016) – Christopher Bell will make his third career ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards start driving for Venturini Motorsports in Friday’s ModSpace 150 at Pocono Raceway. This will be Bell’s first attempt at the Tricky Triangle and will also serve as a preamble to his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start with Kyle Busch Motorsports on Saturday afternoon.

Bell, who drove his JBL Toyota to victory lane in his ARCA debut at Salem Speedway earlier in the season, anticipates the double duty weekend challenge at Pocono.

“I’m really excited to make my first start at Pocono this weekend,” said Bell. “Pocono’s unique track configuration puts a lot of emphasis on the technical aspect behind the wheel. I’m looking forward to the challenge – running back-to-back events will be a lot of fun and give me plenty of laps to adapt to a new track. I’ve had this weekend circled on my calendar for a while now.”

Looking ahead, Bell will compete again with Venturini Motorsports at Salem Speedway on September 10 and at Chicagoland Speedway on September 15.

The 21-year old driver from Norman, Oklahoma currently occupies the sixth position in the NCWTS driver point standings.

Byron ready to tackle the Tricky Triangle of Pocono

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 26, 2016) – After surviving his very first race on dirt last week, William Byron is ready to return to pavement racing. The 18-year-old rookie will now face a new challenge – a track without a fourth turn. Pocono Raceway, known as the “Tricky Triangle” due to its three distinct turns, can be a difficult track for even the seasoned veterans to maneuver. Byron is up for the challenge and is hoping to capture a record-breaking fifth win in his rookie season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS).

To help prepare for the Pocono Mountains 150, Byron competed in the ARCA Racing Series event last month at Pocono. He started third, led three laps and finished eighth for Venturini Motorsports, but gained valuable experience in the process. The extra track time will help him get up to speed faster when he climbs in his No. 9 Liberty University Tundra Friday afternoon for practice.

Byron will also have a pretty stout Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) Tundra for Saturday’s race. He raced this Tundra twice this year, and ended up in Victory Lane both times. This is the same truck which won at Kansas Speedway for Byron’s first NCWTS win in May, and again at Texas Motor Speedway in June for his second win of the season. He hopes to keep the winning streak alive with win number five at Pocono.

Of course Byron is not the only one who hopes to win at Pocono. Four members of his KBM team hail from the state of Pennsylvania and consider Pocono their home track. Truck chief Cody Glick (Smethport), tire specialist Tyler Keiper (Pocono Summit), engine tuner Brian Fisher (Chambersburg) and spotter Tony Hirschman (Northampton) are all hoping to get a win in front of their friends and families Saturday. Based on the team’s performance so far this season, it is a good bet they end the race with a celebration in Victory Lane.

William Byron, Driver of the No. 9 NCWTS Liberty University Tundra:

Are you glad to be racing on pavement again this weekend?

“Being back on pavement is a good thing for me. It’s more in my comfort zone, so I’m excited to get back on the track at a place where I raced an ARCA car last month, so I have some knowledge of it.”

What did you learn about Pocono from running the ARCA race last month?

“I learned how different it is from anything I had done and I got a feel for how flat it is compared to most places where we race. It has long straightaways and tight corners, so it’s good to get those marks down and get a rhythm of the track before I get in the truck this weekend.”

What is the trickiest part of the “Tricky Triangle”?

“I’d say the tunnel turn is the hardest because if you miss it by a couple feet it’s a difficult corner to make. It’s a corner where you can make up a lot of time, but if you don’t hit it right you lose a lot of time. It’s important to get through there and get your truck handling the way you want it to so you can make time on the two straightaways.”

Rudy Fugle, Crew Chief of the No. 9 NCWTS Liberty University Tundra:

What is the trickiest part about the Tricky Triangle?

“The hardest part about Pocono is usually strategy. It’s a short race so you only have to pit once, but you usually end up pitting twice and somebody ends up running up front because of something weird happening on the race track, so strategy is the hardest part. Having a fast truck there is really important too. All the turns are a little bit different. Turn one is high load like a mile-and-a-half and turn three is really flat like Gateway, so putting all three corners together will be important.”

William Byron’s No. 9 Liberty University Tundra:

KBM-023: The No. 9 Liberty University team will race KBM-023, for Saturday’s Pocono Mountains 150. This is the same truck Byron has won twice with this season at Kansas and Texas.

KBM NCWTS @ Pocono

• KBM drivers have collected one win, 83 laps led, five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 6.2 across 11 starts at Pocono
• Driver-owner Kyle Busch claimed KBM’s first victory at the Tricky Triangle in 2015

The Fugle File:

Fugle begins his third season as a crew chief at KBM and fifth overall with the team. Under his tutelage last season, Erik Jones posted three wins, five poles, 925 laps led, 11 top-five and 20 top-10 finishes en route to becoming the youngest champion in Truck Series history and the first driver to collect both the Rookie of the Year and the series title in the same year. The duo also nabbed KBM its record-breaking fourth Truck Series Owner’s championship last season, which was the second with Fugle calling the shots. In 2013, he led KBM’s No. 51 Tundra team to a series-leading six wins and an Owner’s Championship. Entering 2016, the New York native’s Truck Series drivers have totaled nine wins, six poles, 21 top-five and 35 top-10 finishes across his 44 races atop the pit box for KBM.

Fugle has one top-10 finish and one pole as a crew chief in two starts at Pocono in the Truck Series. Erik Jones won the pole and was 10th last year after leading nine laps.

A 'Sirius' Contender

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 26, 2016) – Christopher Bell has overcome the disappointing finishes that put him in a hole in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings after the first three races of the season to emerge as a championship contender. Bell enters the Pocono Mountains 150 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., having finished inside the top five in five of his last eight NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts and has catapulted from 21st in the point standings after week three to sixth entering Saturday’s race.

Since a hiccup at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth in June, where he missed a shift at the start of the race and finished last, Bell has responded by recording an average finish of 4.0 over his last four starts, including his win at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Ill., on June 25. His 120 championship points scored over the last four races are more than any other driver in the Truck Series, including his Kyle Busch Motorsports’ (KBM) teammate William Byron who has won two of the last four races and has scored the second most points (111) during that span. With his Gateway win, the Oklahoma native currently sits fourth on the eight-driver grid for the inaugural Truck Series Chase with five races remaining until the playoffs begin.

This weekend will be Bell’s first trip to the “Tricky Triangle,” so to help speed up his learning curve the 21-year-old driver will be pulling double duty as he will make his third ARCA Racing Series start of the season for Venturini Motorsports. The talented wheelman led 91 of 200 laps and scored a victory at Salem (Ind.) Speedway in his first career ARCA start in April. He also led seven laps and posted a 10th-place finish on the road course at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville in May.

In addition to getting extra seat time at the 2.5-mile tri-oval through running the ARCA race, Bell will be under the guidance of Jerry Baxter, who was the winning crew chief in last year’s Truck Series race at Pocono. With Baxter’s setup and strategy, KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch led 53 of the 69 laps en route to a dominant victory in last year’s event. The win was Busch’s first-ever win in any series at the Pennsylvania track and also the first for KBM.

Saturday’s 60-lap event will be the first of four races for SiriusXM, the world’s largest radio company, as the primary sponsor of Bell’s No. 4 Tundra. The talented wheelman will be looking to continue his streak of strong performances as he continues to prove to be a ‘Sirius’ contender not only for the win each week, but for this year’s Truck Series Championship.

Christopher Bell, driver of the No. 4 NCWTS SiriusXM Tundra:

Do you feel that your strong performances in recent weeks make you a championship contender?

“I feel like we are a strong contender, but I also feel that we need to continue to make strides and get even better. We have been a lot more consistent and as we move forward we have a good benchmark of where we need to be with having the points leader in our shop with William (Byron) and the nine team. I feel like we haven’t quite caught up to them, but we are getting much closer. Since Iowa, I’ve been working really hard with Jerry (Baxter, crew chief) to improve our communication. I’ve been trying to give better feedback to Jerry so that he can understand where I need help in order to make our Tundras go faster. As my relationship with Jerry continues to get better, I’m confident that we will keep improving and we’ll be at our best when the Chase comes around.”

Are you excited to have SiriusXM on your No. 4 Tundra this weekend?

“As I’ve said about JBL all year, it’s really cool to have sponsors that you can easily relate to. Outside of racing, one of the things I really enjoy is listening to music — so JBL and SiriusXM are perfect partners for me. When I travel to dirt-track races or the Super Late Model races for KBM, you’re in the car for upwards of eight hours and good music helps make the trip go faster. I’m from Oklahoma and enjoy country music, so on those long drives you can usually find me tuned into the Highway on channel 56. Earlier this season I realized the importance of fitness and I’ve become friends with the treadmill and need something a little more upbeat to listen to while I’m working out, so I usually listen to KIIS on channel 11 or Z100 on channel 12 on the SiriusXM app through my JBL Reflect Mini in-ear headphones.”

Jerry Baxter, crew chief of the No. 4 NCWTS SiriusXM Tundra:

Where has your team improved the most since the start of the season?

“Christopher has really matured as a driver since the beginning of the season and hasn’t torn up as much equipment — other than Eldora which pretty much everyone did. He and I have worked really hard to improve our communication and we definitely have a better understanding of each other than we did early in the season. He’s doing a much better job of breaking things down with his feedback during practice and during the race, which allows me to do a better job with making adjustments.”

Will you unload with a similar setup this weekend to what you won with last year with Kyle?
“We are going to unload with the same setup as we had for the race last year with Kyle. Erik Jones and the No. 4 team from last year had went and tested Pocono before last year’s race and that allowed all three of our teams to go to the race with a pretty good setup. Erik sat on the pole, Kyle won the race and they were both really fast. So with Christopher have never been there before, it should be pretty comforting to know that he is going to unload with what should be a fast Tundra.”

Christopher Bell’s No. 4 SiriusXM Tundra:

KBM-32: The No. 4 SiriusXM Racing team will unload KBM-32 for Saturday’s Pocono Mountains 150 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. Bell picked up a fourth-place finish with the Tundra in its debut at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City in May.

The Book on Baxter:

Veteran crew chief Jerry Baxter is in his fourth season atop the pit box for KBM. Since joining KBM, Baxter’s drivers have posted eight wins, three poles, 1218 laps led, 29 top-five and 46 top-10 finishes across 77 starts. The California native spent the 2015 season calling the shots for KBM’s No. 51 team, which collected two wins, 10 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes with drivers Daniel Suarez (12 starts), Matt Tifft (six starts), Kyle Busch (three starts), and Christopher Bell (one start) behind the wheel. In addition to his eight wins at KBM, he boasts one other Truck Series win (Cale Gale, 2012) and one NASCAR XFINITY Series win (David Reutimann, 2007).

Baxter called the shots for Busch’s dominant victory at The Tricky Triangle last year. His drivers have combined to record one win, one top-five and three top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 7.5 across four starts in the Keystone State.

Cody Coughli ready to tackle the mysterious Pocono triangle

DELAWARE, OH – Cody Coughlin heads to the Keystone State of Pennsylvania this weekend for the Pocono Mountains 150 on Saturday, July 30 with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The 20 year-old will be back behind the wheel of the Kyle Busch Motorsports JEGS.com No. 51 Toyota Tundra for the second straight race, but this time he’s back on pavement after his first dirt racing experience at Eldora Speedway.

Pocono Raceway, however, is like no other track in NASCAR. It’s nickname describes it to a tee… the “Tricky Triangle.” It’s a big, 2.5-mile triangle with three distinctively different corners. Fortunately none of this is foreign to the Delaware, Ohio native, who has scored two top 10’s in three ARCA Racing Series starts at Pocono.

“The truck is a very different vehicle than an ARCA car, but at least I have some laps at Pocono and know the track, the line and some of its tendencies,” said Coughlin, who won his fifth Late Model race of the year this past Saturday at Anderson Speedway in Indiana. “I expect to run well on Saturday and I’m excited to head back there. Pocono is a different animal, so I’m going to lean on some of my guys and teammates that have been there before.”

The Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver is beginning to feel a lot more comfortable in the bigger, boxier truck as he makes more starts in it. Coughlin’s last truck start on pavement saw him finish 12th at the fast 1.5-miler of Texas Motor Speedway in June. Then he went dirt racing for the first time at Eldora Speedway and ran in the top 10 for much of the 150-lap feature before losing a right-front tire.

“It’s been an adjustment for sure, but I think I’m starting to figure these things out and my performance is starting to show that,” said Coughlin. “The finish at Eldora wasn’t indicative of how strong that truck was and how well we ran. I know that Friday and Saturday at Pocono is going to feel different in the truck than the last time I ran there (in an ARCA car), but I know Bono (Kevin Manion, crew chief) and all of my KBM guys will do their best to give me a good truck and get me to feel comfortable there, just like at Eldora.

“I’m very fortunate to have the team around me that I do. I can’t thank Kyle and Samantha Busch enough for giving me the chance to drive their truck. I’ve been very blessed to have the opportunities that I have and the love and support from my parents, (Di and John), and my sister, Kennedi.”

Coughlin will hit the track for the first time this weekend on Friday, July 29 for first practice beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. Final practice will also be on Friday from 3-3:55 p.m.

Saturday, July 30 is race day for the Pocono Mountains 150. Driver introductions will be at 12:30 with the 60-lap race set to follow at 1 p.m. ET.

Michigan's August race will use provisional 2017 aero rules package

NASCAR competition officials announced Thursday morning that the Sprint Cup Series' Aug. 28 race at Michigan International Speedway will feature an additional, final test of the provisional 2017 aerodynamics rules package.

The reduced downforce rules setup will be the same that was used in the series' June 12 stop at the 2-mile oval. NASCAR's top division also used forms of the package during the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May and the series' stop at Kentucky Speedway earlier this month.

The most prominent visible changes from the current rules package are a smaller rear spoiler -- reduced 1 inch to a 2.5-inch height -- and the removal of rear-axle offset or "skew." Those adjustments -- combined with modifications to cooling fans, the front splitter and the rear-deck fin -- continue the trend in NASCAR's premier series of limiting the effects of downforce and sideforce on the cars. The effects have favored driver control over an overly stabilized car in an effort to promote passing and side-by-side racing.

Before Thursday's announcement, the series' July 9 Quaker State 400 at newly repaved Kentucky was to be the final audition for the 2017 base package. Scott Miller, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition, said after that race that he wouldn't rule out an additional tryout, but indicated that the sanctioning body would likely avoid tinkering with aero rules for the final 10 races that make up the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs.

"After tonight we'll go back and we'll sort of reconvene with the drivers and the owners and the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and decide where we're going," Miller said July 9. "We're open to a lot of different options, and if something like that bubbles up and we have industry support for it, nothing right now is out of the question."

Miller added that the Kentucky race was originally intended to be the proposed package's final event to provide teams "the most runway" toward preparations for next season. But when asked, drivers said they supported one final demonstration, singling out Michigan as a possible venue.

"I think, obviously subject to change after this weekend is over, but my initial thought is I would like to see it back at Michigan with just a few subtle changes that can be ascertained from what we've learned over this weekend and the previous Michigan weekend," Brad Keselowski said July 7. "Maybe a small tweak from what we've learned and go again at Michigan in the second race would kind of be my initial thought, so I would say yes."

Said Matt Kenseth, the defending race winner of Michigan's August 400-miler: "I think Michigan is a pretty good judge. I mean, there's only the one race on it, but that place is starting to wear in a little bit. They've been able to bring a little bit softer tire. The groove has been widening out because it's been a few years since the repave, so I think that's our fastest top-speed track we go to. I think that's a pretty good place to evaluate it."

Next month's Pure Michigan 400 will mark the first time in three races that the 2-mile track has hosted consecutive Sprint Cup events with the same rules package. Last August, competition officials experimented with a high-drag aero configuration before trying out the potential 2017 package in June. The set-up was also used by four teams during a Goodyear tire test at Michigan on May 17.

Michigan was last repaved ahead of the 2012 season.

NASCAR reveals start times for 2017 races

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR, along with FOX Sports and NBC Sports, yesterday announced 2017 race start times and network coverage for the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series -- based on the previously released schedule dates. Through collaborative efforts with its broadcast partners, race teams and tracks, NASCAR was able to finalize full 2017 start times for all three national series almost six months earlier than in recent seasons.

Seventeen national series events will start closer to primetime, helping to bring NASCAR's photo finishes and close, side-by-side racing to larger audiences. Seventeen NASCAR Cup Series points races will air on broadcast television next year, including the DAYTONA 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on FOX; and the Brickyard 400 and the NASCAR Cup Series championship race, the Ford EcoBoost 400 from Homestead-Miami Speedway, on NBC.

"It's our responsibility, collectively as an industry, to ensure the sport is healthy, strong and growing by delivering great racing in a way that best meets the needs of our fans," said Steve Herbst, senior vice president, broadcasting and production at NASCAR. "Earlier insight on start times benefits not only fans, but also our teams and tracks, as it provides more opportunities to plan travel and to purchase race tickets."

Since the initial release of the 2017 schedule, NASCAR and its partners have shifted two dates for the NASCAR XFINITY Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Road America will move to Sunday, August 27, on NBC. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park will now take place on Sunday, September 3, airing on FS1 prior to the NASCAR Cup Series event at Darlington Raceway on NBCSN.

Looking ahead to the 2018 season, the DAYTONA 500 will move to Sunday, February 18, during Presidents Day weekend. NASCAR and its partners are working collaboratively on the remainder of the 2018 schedule, which will be finalized and released at a later date.

In addition to watching the live broadcast, fans can catch all the on-track action by visiting NASCAR.com, downloading the NASCAR Mobile app or live streaming on FOX Sports Go and the NBC Sports app. Fans can also listen to Motor Racing Network (MRN), Performance Racing Network (PRN), IMS Radio Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90, throughout the season.
