Smithley brought the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller No. 0 Chevrolet home to notch his second straight finish of 23rd.
Smithley started the race 25th and ran steadily in the 20s all afternoon to forge a representative performance at one of racing’s toughest tracks.
“I love the track,” Smithley said. “It’s flat and very challenging. We got some good speed out of the car but didn’t get the finish we were hoping for. It’s something we can build on, though.”
Smithley stayed in 17th position in Xfinity Series points.
Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch dominated the race to win. Daniel Suarez kept the point lead.
The series moves on to Iowa Speedway for a July 30 race.
