INDIANAPOLIS -- Jimmie Johnson on Friday led opening practice for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Indianapolis MOTOR Speedway with a speed of 184.185 MPH.
Denny Hamlin was second, followed by Casey Mears, Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman.
Ryan Ellis was slowest with a speed of 168.700 MPH.
Carl Edwards ran 30 laps, the most in the session.
Kyle Busch spun in turn two late in practice while trying to get around Patrick Carpentier. He did not hit anything.
Jeff Gordon, subbing for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was 9th fastest.
Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday at 1:45pm/et and will be shown on NBCSN.
