Dale Earnhardt Jr., on his weekly podcast The Dale Jr. Download, on Monday, said "I miss the people more than the driving."
He said he has been working on the physical and mental exercises for 2-2.5 hours a day.
"This process is going to take a little bit longer. With my history, I don't need to get cute (in returning)," said Earnhardt, who indicated he will see doctors soon to make a determination about Watkins Glen next week.
He said it must have been a challenge for Jeff Gordon because of the changes to the cars since Gordon last drove them.
"You have to hand it to Gibbs. Good Lord, their stuff is so fast," Earnhardt said on Kyle Busch's Sprint Cup Series win at Indianapolis on Sunday.
