NEWTON, Iowa – For the second time this season, Garrett Smithley logged a 22nd-place finish in Xfinity Series racing at Iowa Speedway.
Smithley came home 22nd in Saturday night’s U.S. Cellular 250, matching his finish in last month’s Xfinity race at the seven-eighths-mile track.
Smithley has had top-22 runs in four of the past seven races.
“Obviously, we didn’t go to Iowa with the intention of getting another 22nd-place run,” Smithley said. “We were looking for better. We had a pretty good car – just couldn’t break out of the mid-pack and move closer to the front.”
Smithley stayed 17th in Xfinity driver points.
Erik Jones scored the race win, and Elliott Sadler is in the point lead.
The series moves on to Watkins Glen International in New York for an Aug. 6 race.
