UNB! NETWORK STAFF REPORT
Matt Waltz make his Xfinity Series debut on September 11th, 2015 in the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway.
Waltz said he landed the ride with Derrike Cope Racing by introducing himself to one of the team's marketing personnel during the NASCAR race weekend in April at RIR. He offered his help to the team and followed up on the offer by hauling Cope's car to Iowa recently for that Xfinity race. Waltz, the winningest driver in the Langley Speedway Late Model Division a year ago with 12 victories, said the team offered him a ride.
He said that Brett Bodine of NASCAR approved him to race on the three-quarter-mile-oval at RIR because he had driven on it in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown, a charity race that includes Sprint Cup Series drivers and regional drivers like Waltz.
Waltz will become the second former Langley Speedway Late Model regular to make his Xfinity debut this season. Brandon Gdovic has raced in the series three times in 2015, with a best of 13th at Watkins Glen.
